Daily Car Insurance

What Age Do You Have To Be To Get Daily Car Insurance?

It can be difficult to find out what the age restrictions are on temporary car insurance policies. It is not always obviously clear on the insurer's website how young they will insure someone on a daily policy. Every insurer will have different underwriters and so will be able to provide different coverage including insurance for different age groups.

Until recently the youngest age that you could get insured with this type of policy was 21 years of age. This meant that you had to be at least 21 in order to qualify but many young drivers wanted daily car insurance under 21 years of age to be made available. Due to the high demand for younger coverage one of the main three temporary insurance providers has added a new insurer, Mulsanne Insurance, that can underwrite insurance policies for drivers as young as 18 years old as long as they have held a full driving licence for at least 6 months.

Daily car insurance from 18 years of age

So the youngest that you can now get insured on a daily policy is 18, other insurers have a minimum age of 21 and some insist on you being at least 25 years of age. Although you can get insured at a much younger age now you can expect the daily premiums to be more expensive.

When day insurance was first introduced it covered anyone from the age of 18. As this was a new element to the car insurance industry the insurers and underwriters did not know how this new type of much needed policy would work out. Over time they realised that the premiums were not covering the cost of the claims that were being made and so insurers started to raise the minimum age of coverage.

Other factors affecting temporary insurance requirements

minimum age for temp coverAlthough you can once again get insured on a temporary basis as young as 18 there are other factors that you may need to consider. There are usually exclusions as to the type of car that you can drive, this is especially true for younger drivers. Generally for any age of driver a daily policy will usually limit the driver to coverage for cars that have a value of less than £50,000.

For younger drivers however there will also usually be a restriction on the types of car that you can drive. Insurers providing these types of policy tend to restrict coverage to cars below a certain insurance group. Insurance groups tend mostly to reflect the value of a car and so whilst being restrictive for some drivers most will still be able to get coverage.

There are a number of other factors that may mean you are refused cover for daily car insurance which are factors usually out of your control. If you find that one insurer will not provide cover then approaching another company may prove more fruitful. As all insurers do not use the same underwriters then one insurer may be able to provide cover where another cannot.
